Fanad Lighthouse (Donegal)

This good practice provides for a historical building that is a key visitor attraction in the region, boasting a strong example of stakeholder involvement and business case development.  Fanad Lighthouse worked in partnership with Irish landmark trust, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Donegal County Council and Fáilte Ireland to form a community company to develop and operate the facility on Fanad Peninsula. From this location the history of the water can be told and viewed first hand and would be an ideal location. Photo: © Tourism-Ireland Fáilte-Ireland.

|This good practice provides for a historical building that is a key visitor attraction in the region.  Fanad Lighthouse was developed as a heritage site by Irish landmark trust, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Donegal County Council and Fáilte Ireland who formed a community company to develop and operate the facility on Fanad Peninsula. From this location the history of the water can be told and viewed first hand and would be an ideal location. The linkage of the landmark trust and having the community as the management agent for the project is critical to ongoing development and the operation of the asset. It is also evident that the local community are the best marketeers for this historic building and the experience it provides to visit.  The good practice links to the world wars heritage in Ireland and provides a positive example of Stakeholder involvement and development of a business case.
